Dist. panels to auction assets of Agri-Gold

Essel Group’s Subhash Chandra Foundation (SCF) presented to the Hyderabad High Court here on Tuesday that it would pursue the proposal of taking over the assets of scam-tainted Agri-Gold company. The Bench sought opinion of Sravan, counsel for petitioners and depositors of the company, on how to proceed with the auctioning of the 10 high-value assets. For this, the Judges mulled constituting three-member committees in the districts concerned to oversee auction process.

Agri Gold Auditor Held

Auditor of the AgriGold Group was arrested by the sleuths of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) in Hyderabad on Wednesday. Jonnavithula Durga Prasad, who had been absconding since the scam came to light, was accused number 25 in the case, CID officials said. Durga Prasad allegedly played a key role in handling the finances of the group’s four major companies that had mobilised huge money from the depositors and duped them. He would be produced in the district court in Eluru on Thursday, the officials said. In all, 26 persons, including the group’s directors, had been booked, and 17 of them arrested. Five of the accused are still at large. Another key accused, Avva Sitarama Rao, was arrested on May 22 in Gurugram

Photocopies accepted at AgriGold verification counters

Those who did not register online can also submit papers The Agri Gold depositors, who have lost their original bonds and receipts, will be allowed to submit photocopies as these are being accepted at the ongoing document verification process in the district. The officials said that the staff at the counters would accept the documents for verification even from those depositors who had not registered their names till now in the website www.protectionofapdepositors.com or at the respective CID offices. Nearly 52 counters have been opened at 14 centers in the city and other parts of the district. Verifications nodal officer DSP E. Srinivasulu and CID DSP B. Rama Rao said that the family members of depositors could produce death certificates, affidavits and family member certificates wherever there was a need and their documents would be accepted for verification. They called upon the depositors to make use of the verification counters and the details of the verification process could be checked at the http: agrigold.protectionofapdepositors.com.

Auction of AgriGold properties on December 27

A division bench of the Hyderabad High Court, comprising Justice V. Ramasubrahmanian and Justice S.V. Bhat, on Monday declared the schedule for auction of 19 prime properties of Agri Gold consortium to facilitate some payments to the depositors. The open auction will be held on December 27 in the High Court.The bench was fixing the upset price for each of these properties on Monday. The bench was dealing with a Public Interest Litigation filed by depositors contending that they were cheated by the Agri Gold consortium and sought action.The bench took note of the rate as per the registration department, market value submitted by the officers and the rate offered by some proposed bidders and then fixed the upset price. Now the advertisement will be given on December 11 and inspection of properties can be done till December 18. Bids have to be submitted in sealed envelopes to the High Court before December 26. The bidders shall be present in the court hall on December 27 when the envelopes will be opened.

Try juveniles as adults for heinous crimes: Poll

According to the Inshorts Youth of the Nation Poll, 83% Indians agree that juveniles should be tried as adults for committing heinous crimes. Out of 26,833 respondents who voted for the question, 22,351 voted YES and 2,915 voted NO. The Juvenile Justice Act was enforced from January 15, 2016 after the bill was passed in Rajya Sabha in December 2015.

Govt plans watching social media round-the-clock

HC Judge 'stays' his transfer ordered by CJI

Madras High Court's Justice Karnan today 'stayed' a Chief Justice of India (CJI) order transferring him to the Calcutta High Court. Under law, lower courts cannot make judgments over any existing order of a higher court. Justice Karnan claimed the transfer order violated a 1993 9-judge Supreme Court bench order and requested the CJI "not to interfere" in his jurisdiction.

Bhopal Police educates poor children for free

Police at the Bhopal's Hanumanganj Police Station is offering free of cost education to poor children in the slums, under a programme called 'Bal Sanjeevani Paramarsh Kendra'. For the purpose, a police vehicle picks up children from slums for lessons at the station. Funded by the Bhopal's police department, the first of its kind school was launched 10 days ago.

Second round of Odd-Even from April 15 in Delhi

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday said that the second phase of the Odd-Even scheme in the capital would be implemented between April 15 and April 30. Female drivers and two wheelers will be exempted from the scheme. The move comes after the AAP government said that public opinion was "overwhelmingly" in favour of the scheme being re-introduced.

SC allows states to suspend internet services

A plea challenging the power of State governments to suspend internet services was rejected by the Supreme Court today. Such steps are necessary to maintain the law and order situation in states, said the apex court. The PIL had argued that while internet access could be restricted, services could not be shut down completely.

ISI trains LeT and Jaish militants: Musharraf

Pakistan's former President Pervez Musharraf on Thursday said Pakistan's intelligence agency ISI trains LeT and Jaish militants and that terror attacks in India would not stop until India addresses the "core" issue of Kashmir. He further called everyone fighting in Kashmir a "freedom fighter". He also accused India's intelligence agency RAW of conducting attacks in Pakistan from Afghanistan.

MP may get GPS trackers to stop prisoner escapes

Madhya Pradesh Police is considering getting GPS trackers to stop prisoners from escaping when they are taken out of their jails for work. "On average, 1,500 to 2,000 prisoners work outside the prisons every day", police officials said. At ₹20,000 a GPS tracker, officials believe the technology could be cheaper than building high walls on lands around the jail.

Bihar: Of 60 Dalit scholarships, 59 found fake

The Bihar government's post-matriculation scholarship programme for Dalits is under the scanner after only one of 60 scholarships given in 2015 for the session 2012-13 in Nawada district was found 'genuine'. After the National Commission for Scheduled Castes intervened, it was also revealed that five out of the 12 technical institutes where the students were supposed to study were 'untraceable'.

Indian Parliament repealed 883 laws in 2015

According to data released from the Ministry of Law & Justice, Parliament repealed 883 "obsolete and redundant" laws in 2015. Another 295 laws were repealed by the Lok Sabha and are currently pending in the Rajya Sabha. Also in 2015, Parliament enacted 26 bills into law, one of which was the 100th amendment to the Constitution.

Ex-construction woman worker teaches computers

Nauroti Devi, a former Sarpanch of Harmada village, has taught many people, including the panchayat secretary, to operate a computer. Nauroti, 70, who never went to school, learnt to use computers at Tilonia's Barefoot College. “I carried the computer and printer into the office and used it for regular communication and also take out printouts of notices," she said.

Maharashtra makes helmets compulsory for pillion riders

Maharashtra Transport department on Saturday made helmet compulsory for both two-wheeler riders and those sitting on the pillion. The decision was made following an order by the Bombay High Court. Maharashtra will start implementing the rule by next week. The department has also asked motorbike dealers to sell two helmets with a bike, instead of one, to customers.

An official web portal of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) was hacked by a suspected Pakistani hacker team on Saturday. The website, which acts as a communication medium between the Central Board of Direct Taxes and the IT department field offices, was hacked with messages saying "Pakistan Zindabad" and "we are team Pak cyber attacker”.

2 attempts to attack Mumbai had failed: Headley

Pakistani-American Lashkar-e-Taiba operative David Coleman Headley today revealed to a Mumbai court that two attempts to attack Mumbai prior to 26/11 failed to materialise. Headley said that he took directions regarding the Mumbai attacks from Jamaat-ud-Dawah chief Hafiz Saeed, adding that he met two majors from Pakistan's intelligence agency who wanted to source information regarding India.

IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Sunday said that the government is in talks with several countries, including the US, regarding the issue of cyber security. “[C]yber security represents something like bloodless war…internet... should not be allowed to be abused”, he said. Russian hackers moved ruble-dollar rate: Report

A cybersecurity firm found that Russian-language hackers used a virus to infect a regional bank and manipulate the ruble-dollar rate by over 15% in December. Over 14 minutes, the exchange rate varied between 55 and 66 rubles per dollar, significantly different from the market rate (currently around 78). The bank claimed losses of around $3.2 million due to the attack.
